أهمية الصومال، خاصة من الناحية الجغرافية، كانت سبباً في تنافس الدول الكبرى عليه منذ مؤتمر برلين بين 1884-1885، والذي أدى إلى تقسيم الصومال بين ثلاث قوى استعمارية أوروبية هي بريطانيا، فرنسا وإيطاليا، مع قوة إفريقية محلية هي دولة الأحباش وعاصمتها آنذاك إكسوم.

 

وتعتبر الصومال من البلدان القليلة في العالم التي تقطنها قبائل تنتمي إلى عرق واحد شبه خالص، هو العرق الصومالي، وإن كانت هناك جيوب صغيرة تحوي غير صوماليين من حيث العرق، ويحتل الصومال المرتبة الأولى إفريقياً من حيث التجانس الديني والمذهبي واللغوي، حيث إن مواطنيه يتكلمون بلغة واحدة ويدينون بدين واحد هو الدين الإسلامي، وينتمون إلى مذهب واحد هو المذهب الشافعي. وتمتلك الصومال مقومات اقتصادية، تتمثل في العديد من الموارد الزراعية والحيوانية إضافة إلى النفط واليورانيوم.

 

 ولقد أدت التجربة الاستعمارية، إلى تفتيت الشعب الصومالي فيما بين أربع دول هي، الصومال، جيبوتي، إثيوبيا وكينيا، وكان الصوماليون أقلية في دولتين من هذه الدول الأربع هي، إثيوبيا وكينيا. ولقد كان لهذه المسألة دور حاسم في توجيه العلاقات الصومالية-الإثيوبية عقب استقلال الصومال في العام 1960، حيث كان هدف الجمهورية الصومالية منذ استقلالها، بحدودها القائمة التي ضمت الصومال الشمالي البريطاني والصومال الجنوبي الايطالي، هو العمل على تحرير وتوحيد المناطق التي يقطنها السكان الصوماليون المجزؤون، في كل من جيبوتي، إثيوبيا وكينيا، لتكون ضمن دولة صومالية واحدة، أي تحقيق الصومال الكبرى أو العظمى بحدودها الطبيعية المعروفة قبل مجيء الاستعمار.

 

ولقد تسبب تمسك الصومال بهذا الهدف في نشوء حالة من العداء المزمن بينها وبين جيرانها، خاصة إثيوبيا، الأمر الذي أدى إلى نشوب اشتباكات وحروب متعددة بين الجانبين منذُ بداية الستينيات، كان أخطرها حرب استرجاع إقليم الأوغادين عامي 1977-1978. هذا الإقليم الذي يمثل خُمس مساحة الدولة الأثيوبية والمستقطع في الأصل من أرض الصومال الكبير، أصبح أساساً لصراعات القرن الإفريقي إلى اليوم.
